Changing Your Coverage Option

You may choose to change your TRICARE Young Adult plan option from TYA-Prime to TYA-Select during an open enrollment period following a TRICARE Qualifying Life Event. TYA-Select is available worldwide to all adult children who are eligible for TYA coverage.

To change from TYA-Select to TYA-Prime, you must qualify for TYA-Prime based on your sponsor's military status and your geographic location. Here are some examples:

  • If your sponsor is active duty, you can transfer to TYA-Prime anywhere in the U.S. or overseas. In a U.S. location remote from a military hospital or clinic, your sponsor must be enrolled in TRICARE Prime Remote. If overseas, you must be command-sponsored.
  • If your sponsor is retired from active duty, you can transfer to TYA-Prime if you live in a Prime Service Area in the U.S.
  • If your sponsor is using TRICARE Retired Reserve, you can't transfer from TYA-Select to TYA-Prime. When your sponsor turns age 60 and is eligible for full TRICARE benefits, you may be able to transfer to TYA-Prime.
  • If your sponsor is using TRICARE Reserve Select, you can't transfer to TYA-Prime. If your sponsor is called to active duty and becomes eligible for TRICARE Prime, then you may be able to transfer to TYA-Prime.

If Changing Within the Same Region

If you're transferring within the same region and your contractor won't change, your contractor will simply adjust future premium payments by applying any overages to future premium payments. They'll adjust the electronic funds transfer or recurring credit or debit card payments so you aren't over- or under-charged for the coverage requested. 

If Changing Options and Changing Regions

If you want to change your plan option and you're also transferring to a new region, you must submit a new TYA Enrollment Application to your new regional contractor. You can only transfer your coverage to a new region if you're current in your monthly premium payments. After you submit your application, your coverage will be transferred within 10 calendar days.
