A Message to West Region TRICARE Beneficiaries from the Acting DHA Director

"I know many of our military families are continuing to experience challenges with the stand-up of the TRICARE Fifth Generation (T-5) contracts. The new TRICARE contractors, Humana Military (Humana) in the East Region, and TriWest Healthcare Alliance (TriWest) in the West Region, have both experienced challenges since the start of health care delivery on January 1, 2025. This letter updates previous communications with all of you on actions underway, and the progress made to improve performance.

Our primary focus remains on you – our beneficiaries. We are taking actions that protect our TRICARE enrollees from adverse effects from these performance issues."

Defense Health Agency Extends TRICARE West Region Referral Approval Waiver

Are you enrolled in TRICARE Prime? You should know that the Defense Health Agency has issued a referral approval waiver in the West Region. Learn more about the waiver.

Be sure to bring a copy of the TRICARE West Region Referral Approval Waiver Letter with you to your specialty care appointment.

Are Your Recurring Payments Set Up? Deadline Approaching April 30

You still have time to set up your payment information if you pay by EFT, credit card, or debit card. If you have TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, TRICARE Young Adult, TRICARE Reserve Select, or TRICARE Retired Reserve, you have until April 30. If you miss this deadline, you will be disenrolled back to Jan. 1.

How Do I Set Up Payments with TriWest?

You have three options for setting up payments:

• Option 1: Log in to the Self-Service, Secure Beneficiary Portal. You’ll need your primary email address on file with DEERS to sign up as a new user. Sign up for monthly, quarterly, or annual payments.
• Option 2: Call 888-TRIWEST (874-9378) to pay through the automated phone payment system. No wait time! Learn how to make a payment by phone.
• Option 3: Download the Automatic Monthly TRICARE Payment Set Up Request form. Complete the form and mail it to the address on page 2 of the form. The form is for recurring monthly payments.

What Providers Are in the West Region?

The West Region provider directory is now available. You should use this directory to see which providers are in the network. The type of provider you see can determine how much you pay and your process for filing claims.

Are you a TRICARE Prime beneficiary seeing a mental health provider?

From Jan. 1 to March 31, 2025, you will not be charged point of service if your provider is non-network. Your provider will need to be in the TriWest network by April 1, 2025, to avoid point-of-service charges going forward.

Do you already have an authorization for care that doesn’t expire until 2025?

• Are you enrolled in TRICARE Prime? TRICARE has modified the authorization period and point-of-service charges for your care after Jan. 1, 2025.
• Are you a TRICARE Select beneficiary? Make sure that the provider on your pre-authorization is in the TriWest network beginning on Jan. 1, 2025, or you may be responsible for additional out-of-pocket costs. Learn more about possible additional costs to you.
• Are you or any of your family members enrolled in the TRICARE Autism Care Demonstration? TRICARE rules are specific to autism care demonstration requirements.
