April
This Month In Health is updated with information on monthly awareness topics in health. Read on to explore this month’s topics.
Autism Awareness Month
Autism is a natural difference that adds to the variety of people in the world. Autism is simply another way the brain works. Parents may notice these differences as their child grows and learns. It affects how they speak and connect with others. Finding autism early can help families get support and build on their child’s strengths. For military families, knowing the signs and working with your child’s provider can help make sure they get consistent, ongoing care, even with frequent moves or new places. If you’re worried about an older child, teen, or adult in your family, talk with your health care provider to learn about the best testing and support options.
Early Signs of Autism
Early detection starts with screening at 18 to 24 months. Checking for common early signs in the first 2 years is important. Some of those early signs may include:
- Not responding to their name by 12 months.
- Not pointing to show something interesting to them by 14 months.
- Using few or no gestures, like waving or nodding to communicate.
- Not showing interest in make-believe play.
- Avoiding eye contact.
TRICARE Benefits and Other Support Programs
TRICARE provides special services for children with autism through the Autism Care Demonstration. This includes Applied Behavior Analysis and other therapies that help kids learn and grow. Families of active duty, retired, and some Reserve or Guard members can also use programs like the Exceptional Family Member Program and the Extended Care Health Option to help coordinate care at different duty stations. These benefits support each child’s growth and well-being.
Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, which gives everyone a chance to support survivors, learn more, and take steps that help make military communities safer and stronger. It is important to understand that people who experience sexual assault may face lasting emotional, physical, and mental health impacts. This month, take time to talk openly, learn new things, and reach out to resources that help prevent sexual assault and support people who need care.
Safe and Confidential Resources
As a TRICARE beneficiary, you can use military and federal programs that keep you safe and offer screening, counseling, and help with coordinating care. Here are some examples:

- Support through the VA is available for those with Military Sexual Trauma.
- Safe Helpline is a resource that offers call, chat, and discussion rooms in which you can choose the best way for you to talk to someone.
