The Time to Raise Awareness Is Now

The opioid epidemic has created a large health threat to service members over the past 20 years. August is Overdose Awareness Month. Now is the time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and connect military communities to help and hope.

Know the Risk

Many veterans and service members face high risks of overdose due to specific military challenges:

  • PTSD and combat trauma
  • Chronic pain
  • Substance Use Disorder
  • Challenges with relocation

If you or someone you know are struggling with any of these risks, know that you don’t have to navigate this journey on your own. Mental health resources are available.

Recognize the Signs

Being prepared means knowing the warning signs of an overdose:

  • Opioid Overdose:
    • Loss of consciousness
    • Slow or stopped breathing
    • Choking
    • Pale blue or cold skin
    • Slow heart rate
  • Stimulant Overdose:
    • Racing heart
    • Enlarged pupils
    • Chest pain
    • Sweating or chills
    • Nausea or vomiting
  • Additional warning signs:
    • Confusion or feeling disoriented
    • Seizures
    • Extreme drowsiness
    • Unresponsiveness

What to Do in An Overdose Emergency

Your quick response can save a life. If you see signs of an overdose:

  • Call 911.
  • Administer naloxone, if any is available.
  • Keep the person awake.
  • Turn them on their side to prevent choking.
  • Stay with them until help arrives.

Why Do Immunizations Matter?

People at all stages of life need proper immunization. We are all safer when more people are vaccinated. Here is why staying up to date is critical:

  • Reduces disease outbreaks in your community
  • Fewer doctor visits and hospitalizations
  • Protects people who can’t get vaccinated (infants, elderly, etc.)
  • Keeps you on track with chronic condition management (such as flu vaccines for people with diabetes or asthma)

How to Stay on Track with Vaccines

Catching up and staying current on immunizations is easy. Here’s how you can ensure you are protected:

  • Check your vaccine records or ask your provider if you’re due for any shots.
  • Schedule yearly checkups, as these include recommended vaccines.
  • Use resources like the CDC’s Vaccine Schedule to see what’s recommended.
  • Ask your provider about catch-up vaccines if you missed any during childhood or adulthood.
  • Don’t forget seasonal vaccines like flu and COVID-19 boosters.
