Intracoronary Stents
Intracoronary stents are coils or tubes that are positioned within the coronary vessel to provide support or "scaffolding" to the internal vessel architecture.
TRICARE covers coronary artery stenting for the following indications as an adjunct to percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty:
- To reduce the incident of restenosis
- For acute or threatened vessel closure following balloon angioplasty
- For the treatment of saphenous vein narrowing with previous coronary angioplasty bypass grafting.
Intracoronary stents must be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration based on its specific intention.
