- TRICARE medical vs. dental coverage: understanding key differences
It isn’t always clear whether a condition involving your mouth is covered under a TRICARE medical or dental plan. Knowing which plan to use can help avoid unnecessary costs or delays in care. - TRICARE Dental Program orthodontic coverage: What to know before you start getting care
Do you or your child need braces? You should know that the TRICARE Dental Program covers orthodontic care. Keep reading to learn who qualifies, what’s covered, and how costs work. - What your bad breath could be telling you about your oral health
Occasional bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be a temporary problem, often caused by certain smelly foods like garlic or onions. However, persistent bad breath can be a red flag, signaling oral health issues that require attention from a dentist or medical professional. - A game plan for when stress affects your oral health
In many ways, experiencing feelings of stress is a part of our everyday lives. Life in the military community often comes with its own unique stressors. While we often associate stress with mental and emotional well-being, stress also affects your entire body, including your oral health.
If I enroll in the TRICARE Dental Program family plan option, do I have to enroll all of my family members?
Yes. There are some exceptions:
- You can’t enroll in a family plan if you are a National Guard or Reserve sponsor. You may only enroll in a separate single plan.
- You don’t have to enroll your children under age 1. The contractor automatically enrolls children at age 1.
- You don’t have to enroll your family members who live in different locations (for example, away at college).

TRICARE Dental Program enrollment and coverage
Did you know that, unlike other dental insurances, you can enroll in the TRICARE Dental Program at any time? Just remember your coverage start date depends on when United Concordia receives your enrollment application along with the first month’s premium payment.
For example,
- If received by July 20, your coverage will begin on the first day of the next month (August).
- If received after July 20, your coverage will begin on the first day of the second month (September).
Make sure you wait to receive any dental care until your TDP enrollment start date. If you don’t wait, you’ll be responsible for the full cost of that dental care. Make sure your DEERS information is up to date before enrolling in the TDP to avoid any delays.
