TRICARE Plus

TRICARE Plus is a program available at some military hospitals and clinics. It gives eligible beneficiaries access to care at the military hospital or clinic where they're enrolled.

  • Each military hospital or clinic decides if TRICARE Plus is available based on its capacity.
  • You must enroll to participate.
  • Your enrollment applies only to the military hospital or clinic where you enroll.
  • There's no enrollment fee.
  • Call your local military hospital or clinic to find out if it offers TRICARE Plus.

Who Can Enroll?

You may be eligible to enroll in TRICARE Plus if you're eligible to get care at a military hospital or clinic (including dependent parents or parents-in-law).

You can't enroll if you're enrolled in:

  • A TRICARE Prime option, including the Uniformed Services Family Health Plan and TRICARE Prime Demo
  • A Medicare Advantage plan (Medicare Part C)
  • A civilian HMO-type health plan

Do you live more than 40 miles from the military hospital or clinic?

You generally must live within 40 miles of the military hospital or clinic to enroll. The military hospital or clinic director may make an exception.

Enrollment is limited

TRICARE Plus enrollment depends on available space at the military hospital or clinic. If space is limited, some beneficiaries have priority.

How Does TRICARE Plus Work?

Primary Care

You'll have a primary care manager at the military hospital or clinic where you enroll. You must use your PCM as your main source of care to stay in TRICARE Plus.

Your military hospital or clinic must provide primary care appointments that meet TRICARE access standards.

Once you enroll, you can make appointments with your primary care manager by:

  • Using MHS GENESIS
  • Calling your military hospital’s or clinic’s central appointment line

Specialty Care

You may get at your military hospital or clinic when it's available. If you’re enrolled in TRICARE Plus, you’ll have increased priority for referred specialty services available at your military hospital or clinic.

Care from Civilian Providers

TRICARE Plus doesn't give you coverage for civilian care. Your regular TRICARE coverage rules still apply. For example, if you have TRICARE For Life, Medicare and TFL rules still apply when you get care from civilian providers.

Costs

You don’t pay for most care you get at a military hospital or clinic. However, you may have to pay a daily fee if you stay overnight in the hospital.

If you get care from a civilian provider, your costs depend on your TRICARE coverage.

  • If you have TRICARE coverage: You may have copayments or cost-shares based on your plan.
  • If you don’t have TRICARE coverage: You may have to pay the full cost. This is the case even if your military hospital or clinic refers you for care.
