TRICARE Select Overseas

TRICARE Select Overseas provides comprehensive coverage in all overseas areas.

  • You must show as eligible for TRICARE in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System(DEERS) A database of information on uniformed services members (sponsors), U.S.-sponsored foreign military, DoD and uniformed services civilians, other personnel as directed by the DoD, and their family members. You need to register in DEERS to get TRICARE..

Who Can Participate

  • Active duty family members
  • Retired service members and their family members
  • Family members of activatedCalled or ordered to active duty service for more than 30 days in a row. National Guard and Reserve members
  • Non-activated National Guard and Reserve members and their family members who qualify for care under the Transitional Assistance Management Program
  • Retired National Guard and Reserve members aged 60 and older and their family members
  • Survivors
  • Medal of Honor recipients and their family members
  • Qualified former spouses

How It Works

  • Book an appointment with any TRICARE-authorized overseas provider.
  • Referrals aren’t required in most situations. 
  • You may need pre-authorization for some types of services.
  • You won’t receive a TRICARE wallet card. All you need is your Uniformed Services ID card as proof of coverage.

What You Pay

Costs vary based on your sponsor’s military status. You’ll pay:

  • An annual outpatient deductible
  • Cost-shares (or percentage) for covered services
  • Enrollment fees. Group A retirees pay enrollment fees as of Jan. 1, 2021.

You should expect to pay up front for care and file your own claims to get money back.

TRICARE pays last after most other health insuranceHealth insurance you have in addition to TRICARE, such as Medicare or an employer-sponsored health insurance.
