Does TRICARE cover doula services?

Yes, under the Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration. The demonstration ends on December 31, 2026. Birth doula services are available to TRICARE Select, TRICARE Prime, and TRICARE Prime Remote enrollees in the U.S. and District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and overseas. Under the demonstration, you may get:

  • Up to 6 hours of care from a certified labor doulaLabor doulas are trained, non-medical professionals who provide support for the birthing parent before, during, and a short time after labor.. (Doulas in the U.S. must sign a participation agreement.)
  • One labor support visit during the birth event.

If you live overseas, you must register with International SOS to use this benefit. To learn more about demonstration overseas, visit the Childbirth Support page

Call your contractor to learn about certification requirements. If your doula doesn’t meet the requirements, TRICARE won’t pay for your doula services.

The demonstration isn’t available if you’re planning to give birth:

  •  In a military hospital.
  •  Without a TRICARE-authorized providerAn authorized provider is any individual, institution/organization, or supplier that is licensed by a state, accredited by national organization, or meets other standards of the medical community, and is certified to provide benefits under TRICARE. There are two types of TRICARE-authorized providers: Network and Non-Network. DS.

Note: The demonstration covers birth doulas. It doesn’t cover other doulas. As of April 11, 2024, you may use doulas who participate in a statewide Medicaid program.
