In general, TRICARE doesn’t cover weight loss products.

Important Coverage Information

On Aug. 31, 2025, DHA began implementing revised prior authorization criteria for weight loss drugs.

TRICARE no longer covers weight loss drugs for:

If you’re in one of these groups:

  • You can’t fill weight loss drug prescriptions at military pharmacies.
  • You’ll pay the full cost of the drug if you get the drug somewhere else, even if you had an approved prior authorization before Aug. 31.

These changes:

  • Are consistent with existing statutory and regulatory authority
  • Ensure prescription processing meets federal coverage requirements

What Hasn’t Changed

Are you enrolled in one of the plans listed below TRICARE will cover your weight loss drugs if:

  • A TRICARE network provider prescribes them,
  • They’re medically necessaryTo be medically necessary means it is appropriate, reasonable, and adequate for your condition. and appropriate for your particular treatment, and
  • You continue to meet prior authorization requirements.

You must be enrolled in one of these plans:

  • TRICARE Prime plansTRICARE Prime plans include: TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Prime Remote, TRICARE Prime Overseas, TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas and TRICARE Young Adult-Prime, including:
    • US Family Health Plan
    • TRICARE Prime Remote
    • TRICARE Prime Overseas
    • TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas
    • TRICARE Young Adult-Prime
  • TRICARE Select plans, including:
    • TRICARE Select Overseas
    • TRICARE Reserve Select
    • TRICARE Retired Reserve
    • TRICARE Young Adult-Select
    • Continued Health Care Benefit Program

Diabetes Drugs

Note: TRICARE still covers certain drugs (such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, Trulicity, and Victoza) for all patients to treat diabetes when medically necessary. You must meet prior authorization requirements. Copayments and cost-shares for these drugs haven’t changed.
