Line of Duty for Reserve Component/Command

Unit personnel are responsible for providing line of duty eligibility documents for Reserve Component members.

LOD is an injury, illness, or disease incurred or aggravated while in a qualified duty status. These are orders 30 days or less. The condition must be military service-connected.

  • Army National Guard and Army Reserve: Unit personnel must submit LOD eligibility through eMMPS (electronic Medical Management Processing System)/MEDCHART.
  • Air National Guard and Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Reserves: Unit personnel should submit LOD preauthorization requests and documentation to the MMSO NPE box.

The LOD care process depends on your location.

Documentation Requirements

Initial emergency roomThe hospital department that provides emergency services to patients who need immediate medical attention. or urgent care use Submit DHA-GL Worksheet-01: Medical Eligibility Verification and unit sign-in or muster sheet. Provide documentation as soon as possible after the RC member gets care. Don’t wait for the approved LOD determination.
Follow-on care (after initial visit)  

For RC members more than 50 miles or a one-hour drive time from a military hospital or clinic:

  • In the U.S.: Submit DHA–GL Worksheet-02 “Pre-Authorization Request for Medical Care.” Include supporting clinical documentation and the Service-approved LOD. 
  • Overseas: Send the approved LOD and clinical documentation to the TRICARE Overseas Program contractor.

For RC members within 50 miles or one hour’s drive time of a military hospital or clinic:

  • Work with the Patient Administration Office or TOPA Flight (AF) for help with getting care. 

  • Send the service approved LOD and clinical documents to the military hospital or clinic.

Send your requests for claims reprocessing to dha.great-lakes.j-10.mbx.mmso-lod-misc@health.mil. Always use DOD Safe to encrypt packages and information.

General LOD Information

Military Medical Support Office at Defense Health Agency—Great Lakes or the MTF will use the LOD determination to authorize appropriate medical care. This is for treatment of a specific condition for a period not to exceed one year from the diagnosis date. Those identified for referral to the Integrated Disability Evaluation System may not qualify.

  • Only MMSO or a military hospital or clinic can direct the regional contractors to issue an LOD authorization. This ensures LOD claims process and pay correctly.

Is LOD a government lifetime health plan? No. It’s a special eligibility status. And it’s for treatment of a specific condition for a period not to exceed one year.

MMSO reviews and authorizes LOD care for remotely located RC members living more than 50 miles or a one-hour drive from a military hospital or clinic.

Military hospitals and clinics oversee and authorize LOD care for RC members residing within 50 miles or a one-hour drive from a military hospital or clinic.

Line of Duty Dental Care

MMSO doesn’t authorize LOD dental care. The Active Duty Dental Program provides LOD dental care. You can get dental LOD support through United Concordia at 866-984-2337.
