Medication Assisted Treatment
You may qualify for medication assisted treatment if you have a substance use disorder. MAT:
- Combines drug and mental health therapies
- Is covered when the TRICARE-authorized providerAn authorized provider is any individual, institution/organization, or supplier that is licensed by a state, accredited by national organization, or meets other standards of the medical community, and is certified to provide benefits under TRICARE. There are two types of TRICARE-authorized providers: Network and Non-Network. DS has a special certification from the Drug Enforcement Administration to prescribe buprenorphine.
TRICARE covers the settings below to provide MAT services. You don’t need to get pre-authorization.
Opioid Treatment Program
You may qualify if you:
- Have an opioid use disorder
- Require medically monitored detoxification with direct access to medical services
- Need medical support, but not a 24-hour medical environment
Office-Based Opioid Treatment
The provider must adhere to regulations from:
- The Department of Health and Human Services
- The DEA
- State and local governments
