Ending TRICARE Young Adult Coverage

Your coverage may end for a number of reasons, both voluntary or involuntary.

Voluntarily End Coverage

You may choose to end your coverage at any time. To end your coverage, download, complete and mail the TRICARE Young Adult Application for your region to your regional contractor or US Family Health Plan provider (if applicable). The addresses are found on the form:

A one-year purchase lockout will apply, which means you won't be able to purchase TRICARE Young Adult coverage again for up to one year.

Failure to Pay Monthly Premiums

Premium payments are due no later than the last day of the month for the next month's coverage. Failure to pay total premium amounts due and any insufficient fund fees owed will cause your coverage to end and a 12-month purchase lock out will apply.

Change in Status

Your sponsor should keep all information updated in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System whenever there is a change in family or military status. TRICARE Young Adult coverage ends when any of the following occurs:

  • You reach age 26
  • You get married
  • You become eligible for an employer-sponsored health plan (Note: The purchase lock-out will not apply in this scenario.)
  • You gain other TRICARE coverage
  • You lose eligibility because your sponsor ends TRICARE coverage or loses eligibility for TRICARE

I no longer qualify for a TRICARE Young Adult plan or any other TRICARE plan. Can I buy Continued Health Care Benefit Program coverage?

Continued Health Care Benefit Program

When you are no longer eligible for TRICARE Young Adult, you may qualify to purchase the Continued Health Care Benefit Program.

You do not qualify for the Continued Health Care Benefit Program if you are locked out of TRICARE Young Adult due to non-payment or voluntary termination.

You are not required to purchase the CHCBP. Instead you may use employer’s sponsored health insurance, Medicaid or any other plan offered through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
