Medication Assisted Treatment

You may qualify for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) if you have a substance use disorder. MAT: 

• Combines drug and mental health therapies
• Is covered when the TRICARE authorized provider has a special certification from the Drug Enforcement Agency to prescribe buprenorphine (e.g., suboxone)

TRICARE covers the settings below to provide MAT services. You don’t need to get pre-authorization.

Opioid Treatment Program
You may qualify if you:

• Have an opioid use disorder
• Require medically monitored detoxification with direct access to medical services
• Need medical support, but not a 24-hour medical environment

Office Based Opioid Treatment 
The provider must adhere to regulations from:  

• Department of Health and Human Services
• Drug Enforcement Agency 
• State and local governments
