Getting Health Care

TRICARE is committed to ensuring you continue to get the care you need while you return to Japan or if you decide to stay in your new location. The referral and authorization waiver ends on June 30, 2011. Beginning July 1, you must a referral and authorization from International SOS for care received in the U.S. or other overseas area.

TRICARE Prime Overseas/TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas

Note:TRICARE Prime Overseas and TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas are Prime enrollment options for active duty service members and command-sponsored family members in overseas areas. When enrolled, you have an assigned primary care manager and care is received at either military treatment facilities or coordinated through the TRICARE Overseas Program contractor, International SOS.

Beneficiaries Returning to Japan


Now that voluntary departures from Japan have ended, you may decide to return to Japan. When you return, no action is needed. Simply begin getting care as you did before you left.


If you received care in your “safe haven” location:


  • Contact the overseas claims processor to make sure you get your explanation of benefits delivered to your current address.
  • File your health care claims within one year. Send your claims to:

    P.O. Box 7985
    Madison, WI 53707-7985

  • Download the TRICARE Claim Form (DD Form 2642)
  • Click here for more information about filing claims.

Beneficiaries Not Returning to Japan


If you decide to stay permanently in your new location, the first thing you need to do is update your address in DEERS and on your next billing statement from International SOS. When your address change is outside of your current regional boundaries, the overseas contractor will coordinate with the new regional contractor to transfer administrative services such as premium collections and claims processing. If relocating to another overseas area, contact International SOS or search the online provider directory to find another overseas provider.

Beneficiaries Returning to Japan


Now that voluntary departures from Japan have ended, you may decide to return to Japan. When you return, no action is needed. Simply begin getting care as you did before you left.


If you received care in your “safe haven” location, contact the overseas claims processor to make sure you get your explanation of benefits delivered to your current address. You should not have to file any health care claims for care received in the U.S. or a U.S. Territory. But if you do have claims, be sure to file them within one year. Download the TRICARE Claim Form (DD Form 2642).

Beneficiaries Not Returning to Japan


If you decide to stay permanently in your new location, all you need to do is update your address in DEERS and find a new provider.

TRICARE Prime Overseas/TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas



The referral and authorization waiver ended on June 30, 2011. As of July 1, you must have a referral and authorization from International SOS for care received in the U.S. or other overseas area.


Beneficiaries Returning to Japan


You may return to Japan. If you did not transfer your enrollment, you are still enrolled and no action is required when you return.If you received care in your “safe haven” location, contact the overseas claims processor to make sure you get your explanation of benefits delivered to your current address.

Beneficiaries Not Returning to Japan

If you decide to stay permanently in your new location, you must transfer your enrollment. To transfer, contact your new regional contractor.
