Defense Health Agency

"On October 1, 2013, the Department of Defense established the Defense Health Agency (DHA) to manage the activities of the Military Health System. These activities include those previously managed by TRICARE Management Activity (TMA), which was disestablished on the same date. During the next several months, all TMA websites will change to reflect the new DHA. We appreciate your patience during this transition."

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) Freedom of Information Service Center has principal authority to ensure HA, DHA, and its Components (Military Medical Support Office, Pharmacoeconomic Center, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences) are in full compliance with the requirements of the FOIA. Under FOIA, Federal agencies and components are required to make records available to the public unless their withholding is authorized by one of nine (9) specific exemptions. Only Federal Executive branch agencies and components must comply with FOIA, and it does not extend to records held by Congress, the courts, or by state or local government agencies. Each state has its own public access laws that should be consulted for access to state and local records.

Primary functions include:

  • Responding to FOIA requests from members of the public seeking DHA business records in accordance with DoD 5400.7-R
  • Actively promoting transparency between DHA and the public and collaborates with other government agencies to provide access to information maintained by DHA
  • Providing an accurate and timely response to FOIA requests in accordance with the public’s right to information concerning government activities, while protecting individual privacy rights

*The best way to submit a FOIA Request is electronically through the "TMA FOIA Requests" link at the right. If you need to submit your request by mail, use the mailing address below.
