Behavioral Medicine Division

The Behavioral Medicine Division (BMD) was created in 2006 to meet the increasing need for behavioral medicine expertise and input into multiple DoD level activities within the Office of the Chief Medical Officer at TMA. The BMD provides leadership on behavioral health beneficiary health issues affecting the MHS in the direct care and purchased care components of the TRICARE system.

The mission of BMD includes the following:

  • Develop BMD policy and behavioral health/ substance use disorder innovations in support of the MHS Quadruple Aim for behavioral health readiness, population health, the experience of care and per capita cost efficiency.
  • Synchronize access to behavioral health care, technology, service integration, and clinical quality to achieve mission outcomes.
  • Provide leadership on beneficiary behavioral health issues affecting the direct and purchased care components of the TRICARE system.
  • Lead DoD in developing clinical guidance for behavioral health in primary care within the direct care system.

This multi-focused approach to achieving mission outcomes promotes high quality, patient-centered and efficient behavioral health care in support of the 9.6 million TRICARE beneficiaries worldwide.

“On October 1, 2013, the Department of Defense established the Defense Health Agency (DHA) to manage the activities of the Military Health System. These activities include those previously managed by TRICARE Management Activity (TMA), which was disestablished on the same date. During the next several months, all TMA websites will change to reflect the new DHA. We appreciate your patience during this transition."
