Proximity of MHS Beneficiaries to Civilian and Military Trauma Centers

Objective: This study uses geographic information systems (GIS) to determine the number and percentage of DoD beneficiaries that are within 45 and 60 minutes of a Level I and/or Level II trauma center. The roughly 8 million beneficiaries reside in more than 34,000 zip codes in the US. The latest count of trauma centers (from the AHA) shows about 1,400 such facilities are located within 934 counties. Further, the top 100 US counties (i.e., roughly 3 percent of all counties) contain 417 of the trauma centers (or roughly 30 percent of all of the trauma resources).
