Pharmacy Utilization of Contraindicated Medication Among 65+ DoD healthcare beneficiaries, December 2004 ? February 2005

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the risk posed to the cardiovascular drug users in the 65+ DoD beneficiary population by the following factors, (1) presence of medications in their medication list that are contraindicated for use in elderly patients, (2) presence of specific high-risk drug combinations for cardiovascular patients in their medication list, (3) general risk based on polypharmaceutical consumption (5+ prescription fills during study period). The findings from this study may assist DoD healthcare planners in developing clinical policy, guidelines and educational opportunities that promote more prudent prescribing practices.
