Survivors of Non-Activated National Guard/Reserve Members
Surviving family members are usually not covered by any TRICARE survivor health benefits when a National Guard/Reserve member dies when not on active duty orders.
In the following scenarios, surviving family members may qualify for limited survivor benefits.
- If the sponsor or family was covered by TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS) on the day of the sponsor's death, surviving family members may qualify for an additional six months of TRS coverage.
- If the sponsor dies while covered under the Transitional Assistance Management Program (TAMP) , surviving family members remain covered until the end of the 180-day TAMP period.
Loss of Coverage
- After the loss of eligibility of either TRS or TAMP as described above, surviving family members may purchase additional temporary coverage under the Continued Health Care Benefit Program.
- You are not required to purchase the CHCBP. Instead you may use employer’s sponsored health insurance, Medicaid or any other plan offered through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
