When you retire from active duty, you and your family experience a "change in status."

Here's a quick look at how TRICARE changes when you retire. For more specific information, answer three questions for your plan's info (at the top of the page).

Health Care Options

When you're on active duty, you must enroll in a Prime OptionTRICARE Prime, TRICARE Prime Remote, TRICARE Prime Overseas, TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas based on your duty location.

Because of the change in status, you'll be automatically disenrolled from your Prime Option. You can re-enroll in TRICARE Prime up to 90-days before you retire as long as your retirement date is noted in DEERS.

  • You can only enroll if you live in a Prime Service Area
  • You must pay annual enrollment fees
  • You can re-enroll online, on the phone or through the mail >>Learn More

Or, you and your family can use any of these options:

Covered Services

Some services are no longer covered when you retire:

  • Eye exams are only covered if you re-enroll in TRICARE Prime
  • Hearing aids not covered
  • TRICARE Extended Care Health Option services for family members not covered
  • Chiropractic care not covered
  • Dental option changes to the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program

While on active duty, you paid nothing out-of-pocket and your family's costs were minimal. Now, as a retiree, you'll see an increase in costs:

  • Annual TRICARE Prime enrollment fees
  • TRICARE Prime network copayments
  • TRICARE Standard and Extra costs increase by five percent
  • Catastrophic cap increases from $1,000 to $3,000 annually per family. Any amounts accrued towards the active duty family cap will apply to the retired famliy cap in the same fiscal year when the sponsor retires.
  • No change in prescription costs

Medicare-Eligible Family Members

Medicare-eligible family members must have Medicare Part B coverage to remain eligible when you retire.

Moving after you retire?
