Your child's health care options depend on the sponsor's military status and where the school is located.

Health Care Options in the U.S.

Active Duty Sponsors

  • TRICARE Prime if school is in a Prime Service Area
  • US Family Health Plan if school is located in a designated location
  • TRICARE Standard and Extra
  • Children can only use TRICARE Prime Remote if they continue to live with you in a remote location.

Retired Sponsors

  • TRICARE Prime if school is in a Prime Service Area.
  • US Family Health Plan if school is located in a designated location
  • TRICARE Standard and Extra

National Guard/Reserve Sponsors

  • Same as active duty sponsors if the sponsor is activated
  • If not activated, only covered if you've purchased TRICARE Reserve Select family coverage.
  • If retired and under age 60, only covered if you've purchased TRICARE Retired Reserve family coverage
  • If retired and age 60 or older, same coverage as retired sponsors

Health Care Options Overseas

Active Duty Sponsors

  • TRICARE Prime Overseas/TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas (if command-sponsored and living with the sponsor)
  • TRICARE Standard Overseas

Retired Sponsors

  • TRICARE Standard Overseas

National Guard/Reserve Sponsors

  • Same as active duty sponsors if sponsor is activated
  • If not activated, only covered if you've purchased TRICARE Reserve Select family coverage.
  • If retired and under age 60, only covered if you've purchased TRICARE Retired Reserve family coverage
  • If retired and age 60 or older, same coverage as retired sponsors

Update your child’s address in DEERS with his or her college address.  If you don’t, your child may have problems with eligibility, coverage or claims processing.
