Psychological testing is only a covered benefit when medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment planning of covered psychiatric disorders or bariatric (weight loss) surgery. Psychological testing is not covered when used:
- for academic or vocational placement or assessment
- to evaluate non-covered disorders (e.g., learning disorders)
- to assess intelligence in the absence of a need to diagnose or plan treatment for a covered psychiatric disorder.
Six hours of psychological and/or neuro-psychological testing is covered per fiscal year (October 1-September 30) which includes the report writing by the provider. No authorization is required.
This A-Z list of topics is not all inclusive. TRICARE covers most inpatient and outpatient care that is medically necessary and considered proven. However, there are special rules or limits on certain types of care, while other types of care are not covered at all.
