If You Lose TRICARE Coverage

You may lose TRICARE coverage for a number of reasons (i.e. separating from the service, loss of eligibility due to age, or change in marital status, etc.). When you lose TRICARE coverage:

If you don’t have new minimum essential coverage before your TRICARE or transitional benefits end, then you may have to pay a fee to the Internal Revenue Service for each month you don’t have minimum essential coverage.

Upon loss of TRICARE eligibility, you can get a certificate of creditable coverage. The certificate serves as evidence of prior health care coverage under TRICARE, so that you can't be excluded from a new health plan for pre-existing conditions.
